Lamine Yamal’s baby photos with a young, long-haired Lionel Messi have become lasting images during this summer of soccer.
Yamal – who will celebrate his 17th birthday Saturday, one day before Spain competes in the Euro 2024 final – continues to reach new heights during his promising career. He became the youngest player to score during the Euros when his decisive left boot helped Spain beat France in their semifinal on Tuesday. Spain will face England in the final on Sunday.
Messi, meanwhile, continues to shine during the twilight of his legendary career. He will lead Argentina to its second straight Copa America final on Sunday, against Colombia or Uruguay.
Nearly 17 years later, the two FC Barcelona standouts remain virtuously linked together through photos that now seem prophesying to many, who believe Yamal was baptized or anointed by Messi as a child.
“It’s very exciting to be associated with something that has caused such a sensation,” the photographer, Joan Monfort, told the Associated Press this week. “To tell you the truth, it’s a very nice feeling.”
